The course is based on review articles, original papers, excerpts from textbooks and a list of recommended websites, provided to each project group. The groups analyse and use this material and any other source of information they can find in order to achieve the goals of the project.

To provide an understanding of the Age of the Universe problem in cosmology and its resolution via a cosmological constant or dark energy.

On completion of this module the student will be able to:

explain the theoretical and observation evidence for the amount of baryons and dark matter in the Universe at present.

show that there is a the conflict between the theoretical age of a flat cold dark matter Universe and direct age estimates

show how the conflict may be resolved by introducing a cosmological constant

explain how the required cosmological constant is consistent with observations of a recent acceleration of the expansion rate of the Universe.
