To provide postgraduate students with the research skills required for research at a doctoral level, meeting the ESRC's specifications for an RT-recognized programme.
To equip students with a range of practical skills used for planning and conducting psychological research in professional settings.
To provide students with knowledge of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research and data analysis techniques.
To enable students to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of different research techniques and different types of data, and to ?evaluate their appropriateness for different kinds of research problem.
To enable students to formulate testable research questions, and to design appropriate studies, using appropriate methods of data collection, consistent with British Psychological Society ethical principles.
To provide students with opportunities to engage with advanced research in substantive areas relevant to their own ?research and professional interests.
To provide students with opportunities to develop their oral communication skills, and writing skills, including the conventions used for reporting psychological research.

On successful completion of their studies, students should have acquired and demonstrated the following:
An understanding of, and ability to use, a range of methods used in contemporary psychological research.
An advanced understanding of the relationship between psychological theory, method and research design.
An understanding of the various means of collecting and generating data used in Psychological research.
Proficiency in analysing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data.
The ability to utilize a range of library and electronic resources.
Proficiency in summarizing and evaluating evidence and synthesising and comparing of arguments.
The ability to design, conduct and report a substantial piece of independent empirical work. This includes: the capacity to define a research question; to adopt an appropriate research design bearing in mind ethical and professional considerations; to develop the necessary materials or stimuli; to collect the necessary data, and to analyse and report the data according to psychological conventions.
To be able to communicate information, ideas, interpretations, arguments, principles or theories with confidence and clarity both orally and in writing.
