Educational Aims
This four-year undergraduate
programme aims to equip graduates with a sound foundation in the essentials of
engineering science, together with a deeper capability in their mechanical
engineering specialism, so that they acquire characteristics of future leaders
of the engineering professions and are well prepared to cope with changes that
will occur in their professional life.
In
pursuit of this aim, the objectives of the programme are
to
ensure as far as possible that students acquire a basic core of understanding
in the key mechanical engineering subjects, as well as familiarity and
confidence with some electronics topics;
through
an emphasis on teaching through design, to develop students capabilities in
assessing engineering options across a broad range of subjects, their capacity
to make decisions, and their creativity and flair;
to encourage and value the development of students key skills in
communications, IT (including CAD, analysis and simulation tools), lifelong
learning, team-working and project management;
by providing a multi-disciplinary environment, to foster
students capacity to deal with situations that cross subject boundaries;
to both broaden students experience and enhance the depth of
understanding of their own specialism;
to generate the outlook, skills and knowledge required for future
leaders of the engineering profession.
As compared with the BEng (Hons) Mechanical
Engineering programme, this MEng programme is designed to provide greater
breadth through additional subjects taken in third and fourth years, and
increased depth of study of the subjects taken in the fourth year. A very
important feature of the fourth year, the major group design project, requires
students to maintain an awareness of the full breadth of the whole project,
whilst applying their engineering science knowledge and skills to their own
designated aspect of the task; they must also communicate effectively with
other team members, and with sources of information both inside and outside the
University and with outside suppliers.
The
four MEng (Hons) programmes offered by Lancaster University Engineering
Department are distinguished from each other by their subject emphasis, whilst
sharing similar general aims.
